THE PLOT

 

When Robert De Waal, a retired veteran detective meets a strange, young girl at the institution where his aging mother is receiving treatment and care, the girl makes some startling and disturbing revelations which motivate De Waal to attempt to uncover her past and establish her true identity.

 

All is not as it seems as De Waal and his reluctant partner, Gordon Dewhurst cross paths with a brutal serial killer at a convent near the town of Bathurst in South Africa.

 

THE CHARACTERS

 

ROBERT DE WAAL

 

Retired from the South African Police Services as a colonel in the Detective Branch. A loner who lost his wife in a motor accident, De Waal returns to his childhood home in Mossel Bay to spend time with his mother who is suffering from dementia.

 

GORDON DEWHURST

 

Owner of Gordon’s Travel in Bathurst. Dewhurst is a disgraced professor of history at Cambridge University who became a tour guide. His superior knowledge of medieval history and knowledge of the town of Bathurst make him the ideal candidate to assist De Waal in his quest to unravel the mystery that unfolds at the Convent of Saint Benedict Joseph Labre

 

BETH NTULI

 

De Waal’s mentee and former colleague in the police service. She is able to give De Waal useful information about some of the people he encounters in his quest.

 

MARILYN DE WAAL

 

De Waal’s ailing mother and the reason why he decided to leave the police service. A visit to the institution where she is staying provides the opportunity to meet the subject of his investigation, Carrie Martins.

 

DR GILLIAN GRANT

 

A specialist psychiatrist and head of the institution where De Waal’s mother is receiving treatment. She is an old high school classmate who had an eye on De Waal but could never succeed in winning him over. Recently divorced, she believes that she can succeed by nibbling away at the cherry instead of biting it.

 

ANDREW DOWNING

 

A young geography teacher appointed on a contract basis at the convent.

 

MONTY HARRISON

 

The shifty caretaker at the convent who supplies some of the convent girls with contraband and is the bearer of many secrets.

THE MOTHER SUPERIOR KNOWN AS MARTHA

 

The head of the Convent of Saint Benedict Joseph Labre. An authoritarian who believes that the application of strict rules and principles makes the convent the ideal place to teach the girls both discipline and good morals.

 

SISTER EVE MAGNOLIA

 

Personal assistant to the Mother Superior.

 

SISTER EVE BAPTISTE

 

A young nun questioned by De Waal at the convent and who assists in unravelling the mysteries hidden within its walls.

 

THE CONVENT GIRLS

 

CARRIE MARTINS

 

The strange girl that De Waal meets during visits to his mother. According to an assessment, she is suffering from a dissociative identity disorder. Carrie appears to assume the identities of a schoolgirl called Amanda and a nun called Sister Eve Augustine.
